chipped teeth of the day

This first patient was at a concert, and when the band started playing her roommate jumped up and raised her hands and knocked into the beer bottle she was drinking from. The bottle banged into her front tooth fracturing off the edge. I repaired the tooth in 15 minutes with a composite bonded restoration.

Bone grafts of the week

Following the removal of a tooth, there is a large hole left in the extraction site. The area resorbs and collapses. In order to preserve the extraction socket, dentists place a bone graft. This is very important especially when an implant will be placed. In these photos I demonstrate the placement of a bone graft and collagen membrane following a surgical extraction.

Cracked tooth of the day

This patient had a root canal but never returned to have the crown placed. She bit down on a nut and fractured her molar. The tooth was cracked down the roots and non-restorable. I extracted the tooth. She was not planning on having an implant and she elected not to have a bone graft.

Dr. Gentry’s Article: A New Year’s Resolution You Can Smile About

Here’s a New Year’s Resolution You can Smile About! Ten Steps to Happy Teeth and a Happy You:

  1. Floss once a day. Without flossing you miss 40% of the tooth surface.
  2. Brush twice a day. Brush for 2 minutes with a fluoride toothpaste, and brush your tongue.
  3. Schedule at lease 2 dental check-ups and cleanings each year.
  4. Eat healthy. Cut down on sweets and eat more fruits and veggies.
  5. Stop smoking. It’s bad for everything!
  6. Drink more water. Stop drinking soda!
  7. Stress causes you to clench and grind your teeth, wearing them down and breaking your teeth. Have your dentist make you a nightguard if you do.
  8. Chew sugarless gum after meals. This stimulates saliva flow to clean off your teeth.
  9. Wear a custom fit sports mouthguard when playing contact sports. This helps prevent broken teeth and concussions.
  10. Smile more. You will feel better :-)))
